First introduced by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford as The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The household meals were usually served around eight o’clock, which therefore left a long wait between lunch and dinner. She asked for a tray of tea and slices of bread and butter to be brought into her room. This became a habit of hers and she began inviting friends to join her. Soon after it became a fashionable social event. During the 1880’s upper class and society, women would change into long gowns, gloves and hats for their afternoon tea which was traditionally served in the drawing room.
Traditionally afternoon tea comprises of a selection of dainty sandwiches, scones served with clotted cream and preserves and a selection of mini cakes. With this in mind, we have designed our afternoon tea. We want you to come to our castle and feel like it is an occasion which can be enjoyed as a social event amongst friends and family.
So where better than to enjoy this than at a 12th-century castle? Afternoon Tea can be served in the lounge, or if the sun is shining, outdoors on the patio.
